Quick close your eyes. Now think of a headshot. What did you think of? Just a shot of your face? Your face and your shoulders? Are you against a dark grey background? Or is it white? Are you outside? Are you in a collared shirt? Or are you dressed more casual? Is the picture in black and white? Or color?
That’s the thing, headshot sound so simple, however, in actuality there are so many options. Your headshot should be your best representation of who you are. It should be your style and it should show the best of who you are. Now how do you make one photo show so much. Come let’s explore the many styles of headshots. And then let’s create an image that speaks to who you truly are.
How formal do you want your headshot?
Your answer will determine, what location will convey your vision. If you are looking for a super formal portrait that is conservative, I would say go with an indoor studio location and use a black or white background. These are classic colors.
And don’t worry, these colors can still convey a more modern creative approach when paired with more relaxed posing. Indoor sessions aren’t just limited to black or white backgrounds, you can also use colored backgrounds. Consider beige if you want a clean modern polished look. Or a vibrant color of you are looking for something more creative and edgy. Just be mindful to choose a background that takes your outfit into account. I don’t want you to compete with what’s behind you, I rather you compliment your surroundings.
Another option if you are looking for a more casual picture is to hit the streets and take your session outdoors. Pick a backdrop that matches what you are trying to convey. It can be a park or cityscape or just a simple brick wall. What speaks to you? Your clothing also plays a huge part in the image you convey. In short, consider these things:
- Let your attire match how formal you want your picture? Suit and tie for a super conservative look or should you rock jeans and a nice shirt for your more casual branding session. What speaks to you?
- Pick colors that look great against your skin. And remember your backdrop.
- Makeup Artisit will help you to have a more polished look even if you are going for a more casual picture. Polished is always good! Not convinced you need one, read my blog post and be swayed on to my side.
Lastely, consider your angles. Angles are Everything in photos. Headshot portraits are no exception. This is more in the hands of the photographer, but I’ll give you a quick overview. It will help when you are describing your vision with me in the pre-consultation session.
Let’s start with the wide/ full body angle. This is more typically in a branding session. It helps to set the stage for what you do. So maybe you are sitting in the coffee shop with your laptop or standing in the boardroom with four other lawyers. It can be as formal or casual as you like, but it’s goal is to aid in storytelling.
If we narrow in just a bit, we can get from your waist up. This tells a story as well, but it’s more about you and your presence vs your surroundings. The placement of your hands, face, and posture will all work together to speak to who you are. And don’t worry about picking the right pose, that’s where I come in. So just relax and have fun.
Now if we go in further, we are at a close up more intimate view. In this frame, it’s all about your. Your eyes and face have our full attention. You know the saying “Your eyes are the window to your soul” well this couldn’t be more the case with this angle.
So what do you want your headshots to say about you? What do you need the world to know about you? Like a first impression, sometimes, all you get is one chance, make sure your photo speaks to who you are and speaks well. Book your session today with one of Atlanta’s best headshot photographers.
